Gentleman Afternoon Tea

12th April 2017

Not everyone craves a traditional sweet Afternoon Tea – so we asked the Michelin starred Galvin brothers to create a new-take on a sensational savoury Afternoon Tea. It is ‘probably’ even more indulgent accompanied by a dram of our specially blended whisky from The Athenaeum’s renowned whisky collection.

Indulgent is not the only word we think we should use to describe the ‘taking of Afternoon Tea’. In our opinion Afternoon tea should be reinstated as a mandatory part of a daily routine, if you consider that tea was originally considered a medicine in China! Although we will happily accept all the health giving benefits of drinking tea, a dram of our whisky is far from medicinal, in the 19th century Afternoon Tea was part of the daily routine to be taken in the social circles of the rich, high and mighty. Today we think of it as an indulgent celebratory meal associated with special occasions.

Is it time to change our minds?

Our Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea has been created as yet another reason for our guests to meet and socialise, while they relax in the luxurious surrounding of THE BAR or gaze peacefully across Green Park. And, we are definitely not excluding our female guests from enjoying the delights of the menu.

We are encouraging all of you to ‘indulge’ – and try something different. Fancy cakes and pastries are replaced by a meat based menu of Goosnargh Scotch egg with Gentleman’s Relish, sausage rolls and Lancashire bomb Welsh rarebit. But, we have insisted on keeping delicate Galvin cure smoked salmon sandwiches and freshly baked scones thickly covered with Alsace bacon butter. We have even snuck in a cheeky crumpet.

Delicious.
