24th January 2018

Theatres started springing up in London in the 16th century. The city’s first theatres were used by William Shakespeare’s company, setting up London’s theatre scene for centuries of fame and recognition across the world. From the 1800s, London’s West End became properly established, with the opening of many theatres still in operation today, including the Adelphi, the Criterion Theatre and the Savoy Theatre.

Nowadays, there are approximately 40 theatres in the West End alone, with yet more theatres that have also gained international recognition in other parts of London. February is the ideal month to enjoy a trip to the theatre in London. As the weather is still cold just before the onset of spring, there’s nothing like getting cosy in the theatre and enjoying world-class productions.

Here are some of the shows on in London’s Theatreland in February 2018:

  • Kinky Boots. A story of friendship and a journey from the factory floor to the catwalks of Milan, Kinky Boots is on at the Adelphi Theatre, and features songs by Grammy and Tony Award winner Cyndi Lauper.
  • Wicked. A family-friendly production, Wicked is an alternative telling of The Wizard of Oz at the Apollo Victoria Theatre.
  • Mary Stuart. A play about the last days of Mary Queen of Scots, this is the ideal production for history buffs. Held at Duke of York’s Theatre, the play’s run finishes at the end of March, so this is one of the last chances to see it.
  • The Woman in Black. A long running show in London, having first started in 1989, The Woman in Black is still going strong. It’s performed in the Fortune Theatre, on the site of a former public house frequented by Georgian and Victorian actors.
  • Girl from the North Country. This play using the songs of Bob Dylan offers an insight into America during the Great Depression. Performed at the Noël Coward Theatre, the play finishes its run at the end of March. Catch it while you can!

While London’s theatre scene is still steeped in tradition, the city is also at the cutting edge of modern takes on theatre productions. During February, the immersive theatre concept is coming into its own in an immersive theatre production of The Great Gatsby, taking place in a secret location throughout the month.

With most West End shows starting at around 7.30pm and finishing around 9.30pm, it can be difficult to find a good quality meal at the right time. Our pre and post theatre menu at Galvin at The Athenaeum couldn’t tick more boxes. We’re located in the heart of Mayfair, meaning theatres such as the Criterion are no longer than a 15-minute stroll away. And our menus by Michelin star chefs the Galvin brothers mean quality is guaranteed.

Our theatre menus come with two or three courses, starting off with flavours such as deep-fried whitebait with tartar sauce or chilled courgette soup with Berkswell cheese and harissa. Move onto main dishes such as grilled Cornish red millet with orzo, or three grain pasta with artichokes, sweet peppers and smoked almonds. Save some space if you can for desserts, which come in the form of Valrhona chocolate mousse, English strawberry Eton Mess or cheese of the day.

A pre or post theatre meal at The Athenaeum matches a traditional London pastime with the best of modern British cuisine.

If you’re staying with us and would like tickets for a show, simply contact our Concierge who would be more than happy to secure some for you. It’s show time!
